Suminagashi 墨 流 し or “floating ink” is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into something vibrant and colorful. It originated in Japan as early as the 12th century. Dive in and take a swirl.
Here are some of the items you will need for your Suminagashi workshop:
- Marbling tray (shallow and wide enough to hold the size paper you will be printing on)
- Newspaper
- Small paintbrushes
- Surfactant solution
- Boku Undo marbling dye
- Watercolor mixing tray or plastic cups
- Any absorbent paper or cardstock
